Hi everyone!

My name is Kevin Wang and I'm currently a third year student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology studying computer science. I was born in Beijing, China and lived there with my grandparents until I was five years old, when I moved to America to join my parents who were attending graduate school. I grew up in the sleepy little town of Stony Brook, NY and attended a relatively well-to-do public high school on Long Island.

It was during my upbringing that I first became interested in computers. In all honesty, I was first attracted by the fun games (most notably flight simulators) that you could play on them. Not shortly after we got our top of the line machine in 1995 (a Pentium-II 233 MHz!), my dad introduced me to (or rather forced upon me) Perl, my first programming language. At the time, I wasn't too terribly interested in learning how to program, and I only read through the book to do the assignments my dad gave me. Even as I learned how to program at the time, I didn't enjoy it as my own personal passion until I took a computer science class in high school. By then, programming was something that I really appreciated as a fun mental exercise and powerful problem solving tool.

In hindsight, the beginning stages of my computer science "career" were quite painful, but everyday at MIT I'm thankful for having gone through the experience. Most computer science majors here have extensive electronics or programming experience, and knowing the ins and outs of good coding technique only puts you on par with everybody else. Every day, it becomes more and more apparent to me that the experiences I had when I was young really stayed to help me with my studies in college.

One other great experience I had in high school I'd like to share is a research project I worked on with a wonderful friend, mentor, and Professor named Carlos Simmerling. My area of research was computational chemistry, mainly simulating protein folding on supercomputers. This research is important because it is providing insight the mechanisms by which proteins in the human body are transformed from their inactive structure when they are first synthesized in the body, to a fully functional and active enzyme that performs invaluable functions such as digesting food, fighting off viruses, and the like. The project was a great fit for me because it was at the confluence of computer science and biology, two fields that I was very interested in at the time. This made the work seem more like fun, and I loved spending long hours at the lab writing my code and reviewing simulation results.

The project was also a great boost to my college application. MIT practically expects its applicants to have had research experience in high school. Furthermore, Prof. Simmerling wrote me one of the most spectacular recommendation letters imaginable for my college application! to this day, I still credit him with getting me into college.

Life at MIT has been pretty interesting, but let's save that for another day. Thank you for reading my mother's blog, and I'd like to hear some of your comments!

Best regards,
Kevin

Thank you Kevin for taking time to share your story with us. I can’t wait to hear from you again about your college life.

It’s really hard these days for kids to go to an Ivy League school not mention the top ones. Besides the talents, you must have paid a lot of time and efforts to get in MIT. Now, I have a few questions for you. Do you think it worth the efforts and all those hours of study and preparation for competitions, etc, to get where you are today? If let you give advice to a teenager on how she should balance her study and other things, what would you say? If you want to change 2 things or do them differently from middle school up, what would they be and how would you do them differently.

I ask the questions with my daughters in my mind. They are 13 and 11. As parents, we always want our kids to reach their potentials, to be the best they can be. At the same time, we also want them to be well rounded, have fun, and enjoy their childhood. To reach that is not an easy task. High expectations often bring high level of stress both on the parents and the kids. We are constantly thinking, learning, and struggling with ourselves on how to balance our life. It’s refreshing if we can get insights from kids like you who are high achievers and just grow out of childhood. In many ways, parents are like a bunch of old guys who set up a big trap for their kids.
